Eat if you dare!

Eat if you dare!

Halloween Hand Pies aka Homemade Pop-Tarts! I invited one of my girlfriends over and we had the best time making (and eating!) these spooky snacks! This is the easiest recipe and can be simplified even further to bake with kiddos or in bulk for a Halloween party! Themed food tastes better, right?! Yes.

My original recipe for Homemade Pop-Tarts was shot in 2020 when my Foodie Friday series first started! The original photos are *so dreamy* from Kaylynn Krieg Photo and I encourage you to look at the original recipe for more inspiration - you can absolutely bake these year round for a special breakfast or holiday treat!

Here are the step by step photos, with the full instructions listed in the recipe below! I think they turned out so cute! I would love to see yours - tag me @rhondajenkins if you make these!

Halloween hand pies

INGREDIENTS
  • refrigerated pie crust (box of 2 crusts)
  • jelly or jam (1/2 cup-ish for filling)
  • 1 egg for egg wash
SUPPLIES
DIRECTIONS
  1. Pre-heat your oven to 400°F.
  2. Flour your work surface and roll out your dough. Larger shapes are easier to fill with more filling, so use a large cookie cutter or "free hand" a shape and use it as a template to trace with a knife. You need a top and a bottom for each pie, so be sure to cut two of each shape to sandwich the filling. The bottom shape does not need any designs or cut outs; the top shape is where you will add your details - eyes, mouths, etc.
  3. Place the bottom shape on your cookie sheet and add your filling to the dough. Fill with as much filling as you like, but remember to leave a perimeter of about 1/2 inch without filling so that you can seal your pie without the filling leaking out.
  4. After adding your filling, use your pastry brush to brush the perimeter around the filling with your egg wash. The egg will act as glue to seal the top and bottom dough together.
  5. Place the top shape over the filling to meet the bottom shape and press together with your fingers to seal the dough. Use a fork to add ridges around the perimeter of the pie.
  6. Brush your egg wash on the top and edges to achieve that glossy golden brown pastry look! (optional, but I like it!) Use a toothpick to poke holes in the top of the pop-tart before baking (on any shapes that do not have holes in the design. i.e. the bats!)
  7. Bake in oven for 12-15 minutes at 400°F until golden brown.
  8. Remove pies from oven and transfer to a cooling rack. Let cool for about 20 minutes (be careful - the filling is hot!)
