Closet reveal time! I had to scroll back quite a while on my camera roll to find this before photo...I've been working on this closet for a while! ;) It's finally complete, and I even recorded a podcast episode in my new "mini podcast studio" today!
Here's the back story about my office closet. I did my office makeover at the end of last year and added picture frame moldings around the room to elevate the space - I love it now! BUT I ignored the closet, even though it wasn't functional storage space for me. I'll walk you through the transformation and link all of my supplies at the bottom of this post.
The old closet featured one hanging rack with a shelf above. I wanted to transition from hanging storage to shelves, making it more usable storage for an office.
Before I forget, I have to mention that I added some soundproofing panels to a few of the shelves to help absorb sound and make this a suitable space for my occasional standing desk and my weekly podcast studio! I recorded for the first time in it today and it was a success!
My first step in the makeover was DEMO! I removed the old wooden brackets and the hanging rod.
To create additional shelves, I added supports on the side walls and back wall every 12 inches, except for one shelf that I made 18 inches so I could also use it as a standing desk and a mini podcast recording studio! I used a 1x2 primed common board for the supports and attached it to the wall with a brad nailer then screwed it into studs to it could hold plenty of weight.
After *a few* incorrect cuts (whoops!), I finally got them all done! The hardest part was fitting my body into the closet to attach the supports to the wall! I knew that I needed to get a few new organizational bins to hold different supplies. These woven flat boxes are perfect for photos and keepsakes. These white and bamboo bins were perfect for cards and office supplies.
I added my shelves and then attached a thin plywood to the front of the shelf to make it look a little more polished. Of course, my favorite finishing touch was the labels made with my new label maker!
Overall, I'm so happy with my new closet! It's definitely not perfect (hello, first time to make shelves lol!), but I love it! It's functional and I can easily find everything I need in my office! I would like to add one more layer of paint on my plywood shelf fronts...but it IS a closet after all, so we'll see if that happens ;)
One of my favorite purchases for this space is this woven rolling file cabinet! It's replacing my old wire mesh box that I've had for 15+ years? Ha! Now that it's on wheels, I can easily pull it out, file things as needed, and put it right back without pulling a muscle!
